The Talented Mr. Ripley and Atrani ?
Many of you may recognize this work as being by the great Dutch graphic artist, M.C. Escher. But did you know the town is one of those on the Amalfi Coast, recently brought to fame again by the Netflix series, The Talented Mr. Ripley ?
While most of Escher’s artistic career was in The Netherlands, his most formative years, before the Second World War, were in Italy from 1923 to 1935, where he travelled extensively from his home base in Rome. We are particularly aware of this because his house, below, was just a few blocks from our home in Rome.
However, not only have we crossed paths with Escher’s history in Rome, the Amalfi coast is our second home in Italy.
With the arrival of Netflix’s Mr. Ripley, the locals now fear they will be overwhelmed with hordes of tourists.
Enter Insider’s Italy. Since babyhood I have been visiting Atrani. My mother before me first visited in 1954, and returned for more than 50 years. Here she is, gazing out at Atrani. She honeymooned very nearby too.
And here I am about to train the telescope on Atrani.
Insider’s Italy, however, is no movie. Under our experienced custom planning service for Italy, you leave Mr. Ripley to his own devices and dig deep into authentic Atrani and the true Amalfi Coast.
Under our guidance, we will encourage you to visit in the low season, perhaps early November when the water is invariably still warm enough for swimming.
But should you only be able to visit in the busier months, we will judiciously guide you to serenity, mostly by boat..
and often on foot, and nearly always avoiding the Amalfi Coast Drive.
Our guides (always dear friends) will take you on remarkable annotated walks, always far from the madding crowd.
We organize cooking classes and hospitality in friends’ homes, sparking friendships and opportunities that are often the highlight of your trips.
We open doors into our Atrani, and Amalfi.
Since 1989, sharing our Italy is what we do best.
